Safety Systems

Accumar Cable Lifts and Track Lifts are designed and built to meet or exceed all applicable Residential Inclined Elevator Codes and local Building Codes. The Washington State Elevator Department reviews the plans, inspects and licenses all installations in their jurisdiction. (Some locations, such as the City of Seattle, have their own elevator department.)

These are some of the safety systems found on Accumar Track and Cable Lifts:

Certifications: Accumar is a certified elevator company with the state of Washington. Installation and service personnel are certified elevator mechanics. Accumar's electrical shop is certified and control panels are listed.

Speed Governor and Safety Brake: A centrifugal/mechanical speed governor monitors the speed of the tram car and automatically activates the safety brake to stop the tram if it is going too fast.

Hoist Brake: A second brake is located on the hoist which stops the hoist anytime power is not present; for this reason, they are often referred to as "failsafe brakes."

Landing Gate Interlocks: An electrical-mechanical interlock provides two functions at each landing gate. First, it prevents the tram from moving when the gate is open (as someone may be entering or exiting). Second, it locks the gate as soon as the tram car leaves the landing (so people cannot fall through an open gate or enter the path of the tram). Interlocks are now optional in Washington State, but are still used where severe fall hazards are present.

Car Door Switches: All car doors, when open, disallow the tram from running (in case someone is entering or exiting).

Slack Rope Switch: This electrical-mechanical device stops the hoist if the hoisting cables go slack (say, if the tram car bumps into an object and is held while the hoist continues to pay out cable).

Double Hoist Cables: Each Accumar Cable or Track Lift has two hoisting cables, either of which is fully capable of supporting the car and its load. This is an important safety backup.

Worm Geared Winding Drum Hoist: Each Accumar Cable or Track Lift utilizes a steel winding drum for the hoist cables. The drum does not rely on maintaining traction from friction on the hoist cables (as traction-type machines do). The Worm gear reducers are very durable and safe (planetary gear reducers are not used).

Low-Voltage Car Controls: Only low voltage is used in the car and at each landing "call station" in order to eliminate shock hazards.

Track Lift Bumpers: Track Lift cars are fitted with bumpers on each end of the car which stop the car if they bump into anything (or anyone) on the tracks.

Emergency Stop Buttons: These red buttons are located in the car and at each landing. If anyone sees a problem, they can stop the car.

Key Operated Controls: All control stations utilize keys or coded key pads for security.

High Car Sides and Deck Railings: Car sides and railings are at least 42 inches high.
